Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a devastating disorder that affects everyone, not
just the puller. Trichotillomania, or trich for short, affects the
puller, the family and loved ones of the puller.
If you read my biography on My Story , you
will learn about my journey healing from Trichotillomania. My journey
was a long one, stretching over several years.
The good news is: your journey need
not be as long!
I have learned much about how to
help children and adults stop pulling their hair and picking their nails
and skin. Through using a combination of approaches, which may include
counseling, cognitive behavior therapy, awareness training, sensory
integration, relaxation, acupressure, meditation, chiropractic and many
other complimentary methods, many people experience tremendous relief.
I am a licensed professional counselor who has experienced trich from
all sides. Personally, as I suffered from it, and professionally by
helping individuals and families heal from trich since 1994. I was also
a founding Board Member of the Trichotillomania Learning Center, the
national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of
lives of those struggling with trichotillomania and related problems. My
passion matches the national TLC’s mission, which is to discover
effective treatments to end the emotional pain, isolation and physical
disfigurement caused by this disorder.
My knowledge is based in personal experience, research that I have
learned, and from empirical evidence in my practice. I use traditional
methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, family and individual
counseling and sensory integration. I also use complimentary methods
such as energy psychology, nutrition and refer to a doctor of
chiropractic because a healthy spine creates a healthy nervous system.
The nervous system processes information and input from our world. If we
are in overwhelm or bored, our nervous system is in overload or blocked
from processing this information and pulling often occurs.

Trichotillomania

Tapas Acupressure Technique
makes me feel like it's ok to have urges to
pull
but also reminds me that I'm in
control of the situation.
It makes me feel free of the guilt
and along with that, it eventually makes me feel free of the urge.
Overcoming trich requires more than
taking it day by day or even minute by minute;
I had to take it moment by moment.

TAT got me through those moments,
which turned into minutes, which
turned into days.
I am still working hard to
completely free myself of this disorder and TAT helps
to give me the focus and peace of
mind that I need to accomplish that"

Dear TLC Friends,
I have discontinued the trichotillomania teleconferencing. This
occured after IN TOUCH went to print.
Please continue to support the Trichotillomania Leaning Center
and utilize all the resources TLC has to offer for skin picking and
trichotillomania.
Thank you to those who did participate. I look forward to
seeing you in 2009 at the medical conference in Boston and the fall
retreat. If you live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, or West Virginia please
call my office to schedule an appointment.
Thank you and
peaceful hands to all.
Blessings....Joan Kaylor
