What is Yoga?

The term yoga comes from a Sanskrit word which means yoke or union. Yoga is a way of life that includes the union of mind, body and spirit. Both physical and mental exercises are designed to achieve the union of the three elements. The yoga postures (asanas) provide the physical element s to tone, strengthen and align our bodies. Breathing techniques (pranayama) and meditation complete the union.

What are the benefits of yoga?

At the physical level, yoga has many benefits. They include:

  • Increases flexibility
  • Increases lubrication of joints, ligaments and tendons
  • Massages organs of the body
  • Tones and strengthens muscles
  • Improves lung capacity
  • Reduces stress and improves concentration

Yoga at Simple Balance

The yoga class offerings at Simple Balance incorporate Hatha and Vinyasa styles of yoga. Hatha is a general term that describes the physical movement of yoga. Hatha style is slower paced and provides instruction on specific poses, body alignment and breath. Vinyasa is a flowing style of yoga where one postures smoothly flows into another. Modifications to the poses can be made so that all participating can achieve their personal goals.

Thursday afternoons    4:15 to 5:15

                                      5:30 to 6:30

The cost is $10 per class.

 

 

What do I need to get started?

Please bring a mat. In yoga, our hands, feet and faces are touching the mat. It makes sense to have your own mat for hygienic purposes. Dress in loose comfortable clothing. Layering is recommended.
